Einarson falls short in GSOC final in Steinbach
6:34 PM
Gimli’s Kerri Einarson fell 6-5 to Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni in the Grand Slam of Curling’s Players’ Championship women’s final Sunday inside Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre.
Tirinzoni has now won the event three years in a row.
Einarson made the final after outlasting Rachel Homan 7-6 in Saturday’s semifinal.
Ross Whyte won the men’s side earlier in the day with a 6-3 victory over fellow Scotland product Kyle Waddell.
Jets make it consecutive wins
3:41 PM
The Winnipeg Jets kept that winning feeling going.
In an eventful Sunday matinee at Canada Life Centre, Tanner Pearson supplied the game-winning goal at 6:17 of the third period, converting a perfect pass from Josh Morrissey to propel the Jets to a 4-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils.
The Jets, who improved to 17-22-5, won consecutive games for the first time since mid-November (15th and 18th) and moved within nine points of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Alex Iafallo, Jonathan Toews and Gabe Vilardi also scored for the Jets, who got 24 saves from Connor Hellebuyck.
Winnipegger Cody Glass scored twice for the Devils.
The Jets close out this five-game homestand on Tuesday against Matthew Schaefer and the New York Islanders.
Man’s body recovered, woman still missing weeks after truck went through ice
2:54 PM
Searchers have found the body of a man after the truck he was in fell through the ice on Cedar Lake near Grand Rapids last month, while the search for a woman who was with him is expected to continue.
RCMP spokesman Sgt. Paul Manaigre said local searchers recovered the body of Corbin Constant, 31, Thursday, but the remains of Tasha Ferland, 23, have yet to be found.
Manaigre said further search efforts are expected to continue, depending on the weather.
Grand Rapids RCMP were called about the incident at about 1:20 a.m. on Dec. 16.
The truck broke through the ice about 75 metres from shore, near the Manitoba Hydro boat launch, west of the Grand Rapids Generating Station.
Tracks were seen leading from the boat ramp onto the ice.
