7-Eleven to open outlets in city: mayor

Mayor Scott Gillingham has said 7-Eleven still plans to open more stores Winnipeg even as closes some locations.

Eight 7-Elevens have closed in Winnipeg since 2024 widely owing to rampant theft.

The most recent are at Notre Dame Avenue and Arlington Street, and Keewatin Street and Logan Avenue.

However, the mayor told reporters Tuesday, more outlets will open.

“Last I was told, we’ll be getting new ones,” he said.

Gillingham said it’s his understanding 7-Eleven is moving toward a different model and the closure of the stores is not isolated to Winnipeg, pointing to “hundreds” of stores that have been closed across North America.

“This is not just a Winnipeg thing,” he said.

A request for comment from 7-Eleven was not immediately accommodated Tuesday, but the company said in an April earnings filing it plans to close 645 stores and open 205 locations in the 2026 fiscal year.

In Winnipeg, stores on Main Street, Pembina Highway and McPhillips Street have shuttered.

RCMP seek masked vandal

Police are asking for the public’s help locating a disguised person who vandalized a convenience store in Rapid City early Saturday.

At about 4 a.m. RCMP said the suspect — wearing a smock, face mask, glasses and a hat covering long-red hair  — spray-painted over security cameras at a Second Avenue store, said an RCMP news release on Tuesday.

Police have now released a photo of the disguised suspect, but said it’s unknown if the person is a man or woman.

RCMP said no other damage was reported.

Chartrand running unopposed for ninth term

Manitoba Métis Federation president David Chartrand is running unopposed for a ninth term.

Chartrand has led the Métis government since 1997.

“The work I started almost 30 years ago has been a labour of love for our Nation, always guided by the will of our citizens. This is work I am determined to complete in this term,” Chartrand said in a news release Tuesday.

Elections for the MMF executive are on June 23.

Selkirk man missing since December found dead

A Selkirk man missing since December was found dead on Brady Road, north of the Perimeter highway.

Blair Colles, 37, was last seen leaving an address on Manitoba Avenue on December 24, 2025. He was reported missing shortly after.

Although no criminality is suspected, the cause of death remains under investigation as RCMP await the results of the autopsy, Mounties said in a news release Tuesday.
