The former captain of the Winnipeg Jets returns to the Manitoba capital next week as host of his new fund-raising golf tournament, the Dale Hawerchuk Charity Classic.

The event will take place Wednesday at Pine Ridge Golf Club and will include an extensive cast of retired NHL luminaries such as Wendel Clark, former Jets Dave Ellett, Thomas Steen, Laurie Boschman, Ray Neufeld (all his former teammates) and Kris King.

As well, organizers are promising attendance by former Manitoba Moose captain Mike Keane, Brad Park, Gerry Cheevers, Billy Smith, Claude Lemieux, Lanny McDonald, Charlie Simmer, Dennis Maruk and Winnipeg native and broadcaster Rod Black.

With the main sponsorship backing of Scotia Mortgage Authority, the event is targeting its fundraising for the Manitoba Kidney Foundation and the Manitoba Moose Yearling Foundation.

Fans hoping for autographs or maybe a picture with the former NHL stars will find their best shot at the Tuesday night VIP event at 4 Play Sports Bar on Portage Avenue across from the MTS Centre.

Organizers said that a small cover charge will provide ample interaction possibilities with Hawerchuk and friends. For the keeners, a ticket into the VIP event is $150 (hawerchukgolf@jacksonevents.ca or 519-643-8727 and ask for Jennifer). Live and silent auctions are scheduled for the Tuesday-evening affair.

As of late in the week, a few golf tournament spots were still available. For more information, check the contact information above.

Hawerchuk, who exceeded 100 points six times while in a Jets uniform, finished his NHL career in 1997 with 1,409 points in 1,188 games.

The Toronto native and former first-overall draft pick, now 47, is the new head coach of the Ontario Hockey League’s Barrie Colts but has created a window in his schedule to get next week’s golf event off the ground.

"We’ve been putting this together since the spring and then this coaching job came along," Hawerchuk said Friday night from Sudbury, Ont., where his Colts were playing an exhibition game. "But this worked out well; I’m only going to miss one practice. Besides, the guys have probably seen a little too much of me in the last two weeks, so they’ll appreciate (my trip)."

Hawerchuk, an eight-handicapper, has been involved with numerous charity golf events and said the reason he’s headlining this one is because it’s a win-win.

"There are some former NHL greats, there will be lots of jerseys given away and lots of great auction items and the whole situation with the charities is just a win-win," he said. "I was so happy when one of our (golf-tournament) sponsors at Scotia said they were interested in doing something in the West, so I said, ‘Let’s do Winnipeg.’"

The University of Manitoba Bisons golf teams begin their fall schedules this weekend in the U.S.

Still completely unfunded by the university, the teams have continued to do their own fund-raising so they can compete. The 2010 schedule includes six tournaments for the men’s team and four for the women’s squad.

The women are at the Cobber Invitational and Concordia Invitational this weekend at Wildflower near Detroit Lakes, Minn.

The men travel to the Minneapolis area to compete in the Augsburg College Fall Invitational at Majestic Oaks Golf Club.

The women’s team has Chelsea Hummelt, Manitoba Amateur champ Mindy Lichtman, Lauren Rousseau, Sara Stebeleski, Lindsay Stewart, Bri-Ann Tokariwski and Kayla Allen on its roster.

The men’s team includes Willingdon Cup team member Jesse Skelton, team captain Bobby Wiebe, Riley Unger, Josh Wytinck, Jeff Bassey, Nathan Wazney, Ryan Cook, Bryce Barr, Scott Mazur, Charlie Boyechko, Alex Crawford and J.J. Wiens.
