Fabian Manning quits Senate and runs for Conservatives in N.L. riding

HOLYROOD, N.L. – Fabian Manning has announced he has quit the Senate and will be running for the Conservatives in the riding of Avalon.

During his announcement, Manning said that his first love is elected politics, and the real decision-making is in Parliament rather than the Senate.

Several provincial cabinet ministers and members of the legislature joined Manning at his announcement in Holyrood.

The riding covers much of the Avalon Peninsula outside of St. John’s, and is currently held by Liberal Scott Andrews.

Manning ran in the 2008 election and came second in the race, losing his seat in Parliament.

However, unlike the 2008 campaign, some provincial Conservatives are supporting their federal counterparts in this race.

In the previous election, former premier Danny Williams orchestrated the Anything But Conservative campaign, helping shut the Tories out in the province.
