East St. Paul’s centennial celebrations just got a big boost from the feds.
On Tues., July 7, MP Joy Smith (Kildonan-St. Paul) announced that the federal government would provide $53,000 to East St. Paul’s 100th anniversary festivities by way of the Community Anniversaries component of the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program.
“Important milestones such as these centennial celebrations help us recognize our shared history and heritage, and strengthen local pride,” Smith said in a statement.
“These funds will contribute to a variety of projects to recognize and share our 100 years of history in East St. Paul,” said mayor Shelley Hart.
East St. Paul’s official anniversary takes place in 2016. However, the former agricultural community will begin celebrations in November 2015.
“November 1915 was when the municipality was first incorporated,” Hart explained. “First council meeting was January 1916. So we’re going to have events throughout the year, not just one single.”
