The Herald posed four questions to all candidates for election in Elmwood-Transcona. Here are the responses from NDP candidate Daniel Blaikie.

Q: How would you help spur economic development in Elmwood-Transcona?
A:
The NDP wants to ensure Canada doesn’t get left behind in the developing green economy. Employers like New Flyer Industries stand to gain from a federal government that invests in technologies that lower carbon emissions. Our commitment to lowering the small business tax from 11 to 9 per cent will also help small businesses in our community, which we know are the biggest source of new private sector jobs.

Q: How do you feel you and your party can support the lives of the riding residents, particularly those with lower than average annual incomes?
A:
The NDP is committed to directly addressing some of the biggest financial challenges to people in Elmwood-Transcona. We’ll invest in creating affordable childcare spaces, expand the Canada Pension Plan, get a better price on prescription drugs and build affordable housing.

Q: What project would you like to pursue within the riding if you had the chance to bring it to the federal level?
A:
Municipalities don’t simply need more money for infrastructure, they need it delivered in a steady, reliable fashion, so they can implement multi-year plans to address their infrastructure deficits. The NDP has committed to providing $1.5 billion a year to municipalities out of the existing gas tax to repair Canada’s infrastructure.
As your MP, I would work with local representatives from all levels of government to identify the most urgent local priorities, and ensure Elmwood-Transcona gets its fair share of the funding.

Q: What issue, that is not one of the issues above, do you feel is of the most concern to Elmwood-Transcona residents and how will you address it?
 A:
The other important issue that comes up frequently on the doorstep beyond childcare, pension income and health care is climate change. We can’t meaningfully tackle this problem without leadership from the federal government.
An NDP government would stop Harper’s shameful practice of sabotaging international efforts to fight climate change, pass Jack Layton’s Climate Change Accountability Act and build a pan-Canadian cap-and-trade system to establish and meet emission reduction goals.
