The Herald posed four questions to all candidates for election in Elmwood-Transcona. Here are the responses from Green Party candidate Kim Parke.

Q: How would you help spur economic development in Elmwood-Transcona?
A:
Small business is the backbone of any economy and I would work hard to ensure small business development programs were fully supported to ensure success. I resonate with the hard work ethic of the residents of Elmwood-Transcona. While I am a resident of the area, I know friends who are or have been. The strong union trades workers are also equally important in the Green plan to ensure every home in the area is retrofitted with the latest energy-efficient technology. This is a win-win for Elmwood-Transcona, and any jurisdiction that votes in a Green candidate.

Q: How do you feel you and your party can support the lives of the riding residents, particularly those with lower than average annual incomes?
A:
I know personally the feeling of living with a lower than average income. The only party that is addressing this issue is the greens. The Guaranteed Livable Income would merge existing programs and transfers together, reducing duplication. It would supplement an individual’s income, and would be reduced as an individual earns additional income. This would improve health outcomes of families, and help reduce the crime rate. The GLI would not reduce incentive to create jobs.

Q: What project would you like to pursue within the riding if you had the chance to bring it to the federal level?
A:
A great personal passion of mine is children and our young people, from birth to young adulthood. I feel we must teach and more importantly guide our young people and help them be prepared for the real world. It takes work and commitment to build a life and I feel young people needs aren’t being met in the way that it is best for them especially with regards to the economy.

Q: What issue, that is not one of the issues above, do you feel is of the most concern to Elmwood-Transcona residents and how will you address it?
A:
The feedback I am getting from the residents of Elmwood-Transcona is that they are concerned about the widening income gap. This concern is heard from all ages. The Green Party’s GLI discussed in the above question addresses this 100 per cent. Economists and experts endorse this idea.
It gives the people back their dignity. Finally something worth the effort of getting out to vote!
