Liberal incumbent Terry Duguid retains Winnipeg South

Winnipeg South is Liberal red once more after Terry Duguid claimed his third consecutive election win.

The incumbent won with 47 per cent of the vote, Conservative Melanie Maher has finished second (at 34 per cent), followed by the NDP’s Aiden Kahanovitch (14 per cent) and the People’s Party of Canada’s Byron Curtis Gryba (four per cent).

Duguid thanked voters and supporters and was, at times,  interrupted by chants of “four more years.” 

“Wow, what a resounding victory and this is your victory. Let me start by thanking the good people of Winnipeg South for electing me for a third time,” he said.

Winnipeg South is a bellwether riding, meaning the winner has been a member of the party elected to form government since 1988. With the Liberals projected to claim another minority government, that streak is set to continue.

The vote didn’t appear as close as some may have expected. Some early predictions suggested Winnipeg South could produce a close race. That’s partly because it includes many new Canadians, who are more likely to vote Liberal, and many suburban residents, who are more likely to vote Conservative.

In 2019, Duguid won the seat with 42 per cent of the vote, while Maher finished second with 39 per cent.

The re-elected MP credited his party’s success to the Liberal government’s performance and its platform.

“I think Canadians have faith in us to finish the fight against the pandemic. I think they have confidence in us to protect our health care, to bring in $10-a-day child care, to support our seniors. Our platform, I think, was very, very solid, very sound… I think the message really shone through at the end,” said Duguid.
