Premier Greg Selinger said Sunday the NDP will give tax breaks to seniors and farmers if the party is returned to power on Oct. 4.

Speaking at a home in Royalwood in the constituency of Southdale, Selinger said he would eliminate the school tax for Manitoba seniors during his next mandate. The estimated savings provincewide would be $35 million.

“By eliminating the school tax for seniors they will no longer have that burden and it will make it easier for them to remain in their homes for as long as they wish to,” the premier said.

Premier Greg Selinger is scheduled to make an announcement Friday morning with Winnipeg Jets owner Mark Chipman.

Selinger also pledged to save farmers $14 million a year by eliminating the school tax from farmland. Currently, the province gives farmers an 80 per cent break on that tax.
