THE PAS — A re-elected NDP government would repave Hwy. 10 north to Provincial Road 287, Premier Greg Selinger said Saturday in this northern community.

Selinger said the roadwork will be part of $80 million in highway and road construction in the north over the next four years.

Selinger, with incumbent NDP candidate Frank Whitehead, also promised $100,000 to spruce up The Pas’s riverfront park on the North Saskatchewan River as part of the town’s centennial next year.

Selinger also touched down in Thompson and Flin Flon during his northern campaign swing.

In Flin Flon he promised a new emergency room for residents if his government is re-elected Oct. 4.

He said an NDP government would spend $10 million to redo the Flin Flon General Hospital’s ER.

Selinger, with NDP candidate Clarence Pettersen, also said the New Democrats would rebuild Hwy. 10 between Bakers Narrows and Flin Flon.

He made similar pledges in Thompson by promising to spend $2 million to upgrade the mining town’s Northern Consultation Clinic.

He said by increasing medical services, such as in urology and pediatric care, it would spare about 1,000 patient trips to Winnipeg each year.

Also in Thompson Selinger, with NDP MLA Steve Ashton, said if elected for a fourth term his government would spend $65 million on other northern highways and roads.

He said the work is needed in the lead-up to the construction of the already-announced Keeyask dam and the planned mega Conawapa dam over the next 20 years.

The work includes paving Hwy. 6 south of Ponton and near Sasagiu Rapids, grading PR 391 and the Split Lake access road and with Manitoba Hydro upgrading PR 280.

Selinger also made a surprise stop at the Thompson YWCA for the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event to raise awareness on violence women.

“I left my high-heeled sneakers at home,” Selinger told walkers. “Next year I’ll do it with you.”

He and Ashton also toured the new University College of North campus under construction. The $82-million facilty will be open in about two years.

Ashton also took a shot against the NDP’s Tory opponents for ignoring the north.

“I think there’s been more sightings of Elvis than the Conservative leader in northern Manitoba,” Ashton said.

Progressive Conservative Leader Hugh McFadyen is campaiged in Swan River today.

There are four ridings that make up Manitoba’s north and the NDP currently hold them all. None appear at risk by challenges by the PCs or Liberals.
