The NDP promised Wednesday to help new and established companies in Manitoba benefit from future Hydro mega-projects here and around the world.

Premier Greg Selinger said, if re-elected, the NDP would create a $30-million fund to help local manufacturers and other businesses prosper from huge dam-building projects such as Keeyask and Conawapa.

“We will ensure Manitoba firms are ready to bid on these construction projects and hire Manitobans,” he said.

The NDP is promising help for local companies and workers for projects such as transmission lines.

At the same time, the NDP will spend $5 million a year on training — particularly in northern and aboriginal communities — to ensure Manitobans are able to take advantage of the well-paying construction jobs that become available, Selinger said.

Investment in the Bipole III transmission line and the new Keeyask and Conawapa dams will exceed $15 billion and create 25,000 person years of employment, the NDP say.
