After a close race, the Manitoba Liberal party emerged victorious in Tyndall Park on election night.

After eight years of NDP representation, citizens elected the Cindy Lamoureuxs. She won with 2,851 votes to NDP candidate Ted Marcelino’s 1,613, with 34 of 37 polls reporting.

PC candidate Dalit Kainth came in third with 669 votes, Fleur Mann of the Greens had 122 votes, and Frank Komarniski with the Communist Party of Canada (Manitoba) came last with 16 votes.

The competition was fierce between Lamoureux and Marcelino. Lamoureux had previously served as MLA for Burrows since 2016, and following changes to the constituency’s boundaries, she decided to follow most of her constituents into the redrawn Tyndall Park constituency.

“I have to say…I was just as nervous as excited. It was a long 82-day campaign. But all we could do was work our hardest and hope for the best,” Lamoureux said. “I’m honoured that I get to serve the constituents here in Tyndall Park, that really is the prize.”

“I know we are going to be talking a lot about health care and crime. I’m personally very passionate about seniors. I’m sure those are going to be topics to tackle in October.”

Lamoureux added that during the campaign, she heard from a lot of people who were concerned about the future of the Seven Oaks General Hospital, the rise of residential break-ins, and the meth crisis.

The area will be represented by a candidate who is opposed to the re-elected PC government and will make sure that residents’ concerns are heard, Lamoureux said.

“I think a lot of it is holding the government accountable. I’m a very constituency-focused type of politician though, so all I want to do is bring my constituents’ ideas, concerns, and thoughts into the Manitoba legislature,” she said.

Marcelino had served as MLA for Tyndall Park since 2011 and was well known in the community for helping new Canadians. Although he will not be going back to the legislature, Marcelino kept a smile on his face throughout the night.

“I want to extend my congratulations to my worthy opponent. We are lucky that we have people that sacrífice most of their lives to the public service,” he said. “However, at my age, you would think that this is goodbye. I will still be involved. And the NDP will form the next government.”
