I hate to say it, but I now know how a lot of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers must have felt when they let the Banjo Bowl slip through their fingers with a bungled fourth quarter, giving Saskatchewan a win it didn't deserve.

Hey there, time traveller!

I hate to say it, but I now know how a lot of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers must have felt when they let the Banjo Bowl slip through their fingers with a bungled fourth quarter, giving Saskatchewan a win it didn’t deserve.

Somewhere along the way this year, the Sports Department’s Spirit of Christmas campaign got derailed and we’ve come up a little short. After a good start in our efforts to raise $220,000 to help the Christmas Cheer Board pay its bills this year, we stumbled and have come up a little shy.

We don’t know if it was the way the holidays fell, creating some nice long weekends to enjoy, or if we simply didn’t hammer home the need as strongly as we should have.

Our good friend Kevin Rollason is counting the last of the coins collected for the paper’s Pennies from Heaven campaign and we are confident that he can make up our shortfall and keep the Cheer Board out of red ink.

Kai Madsen, board executive director, said Friday donations this year have been solid and he believes there will be enough money to cover off the close to 19,000 hampers that were delivered this year.

"Donations have been strong this year, so we are going to be OK," he said.

We want to make note of the strong support we have received from the IBM Christmas Should Happen to Everyone Corporate Challenge and the city’s five-pin bowlers. While we may have dropped the ball in the fourth quarter, they certainly didn’t.

We would like to thank all of you for your help in making Christmas just a little bit better for more than 50,000 people, more than 20,000 of them children, in our community.

Besides today’s list of donors we are running a breakdown of contributions from various bowling leagues.
