❯❯ About the BLACKHAWKS
Chicago (33-37-10 pending Friday night’s game vs. St. Louis) comes to town to finish off a season that has been disappointing, to say the least. After winning the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015, the Blackhawks will be on the outside looking in when 16 teams begin fighting for the most coveted trophy in hockey next week.
A long-term injury to starting G Corey Crawford that limited him to just 28 games this season had a major impact, as did the season-long absence of RW Marian Hossa due to illness.
All-star RW Patrick Kane (27G, 47A) had another solid season to lead the team in scoring. Rookie RW Alex DeBrincat burst on to the scene with a strong debut (28G, 24A) while Winnipeg-born C Jonathan Toews (20G, 32A) has continued to produce. C Nick Schmaltz (21G, 30A), LW Brandon Saad (18G, 17A) and C Artem Anisimov (20G, 11A) have provided some offence, as well.
Winnipegger Patrick Sharp has had a tough season (10G, 11A) and there are rumblings about possible retirement.
On the blue line, veteran D Duncan Keith (2G, 30A) is down from his usual production. D Brent Seabrook (6G, 19A) also has struggled to produce as age begins to catch up.
Chicago’s power play has been surprisingly weak, clicking at just 16.1 per cent, fourth-worst rate in the NHL. The Blackhawks’ penalty killing also has been ineffective at times, as their 79.1 per cent success rate is just 20th in the NHL.
Chicago has won three of four head-to-head meetings with Winnipeg this season.
