AFTER the most successful season in their 20-year history, the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Swan Valley Stampeders need a new general manager and head coach.
Barry Wolff, who guided the Stamps to the Turnbull Cup final before losing 3-2 in overtime of Game 7 to the Portage Terriers on April 22, has become the new GM and head coach of the BCHL’s Merritt Centennials.
Wolff, hired by the Stamps as a replacement for Taurean White three games into the regular season, had a year to go on his two-year contract. However, he had an opt-out clause available prior to May 31.
“We knew when we hired him it was a possibility after this season,” said Pat Morden, president of the community-owned team with a volunteer board of governors. “Clearly, that’s where his roots are, in B.C. We weren’t necessarily expecting it, but not totally surprised.”
Morden said the club would like to act swiftly to hire Wolff’s successor, adding Darren Webster, the club’s assistant GM and assistant coach, has a full-time job as a financial planner but will remain with the team in his current role.
“The plan is to have somebody in place by the end of this month,” Morden said. “Based on the quality of the applicants we’ve got thus far in the last 24 hours, I would say that’s a realistic possibility.”
Wolff’s departure isn’t the only shuffle underway in the MJHL.
Earlier this spring, the Winkler Flyers and GM Ken Pearson parted ways after eight seasons, and Steve Mullin’s contract wasn’t renewed after one season as head coach.
Pearson has returned to the Neepawa Natives as their GM and head coach, while the Flyers hired Jeff Jeanson as their new GM and Kelvin Cech, formerly an assistant coach with the UBC Thunderbirds men’s hockey program, to serve as head coach.
In addition, the Virden Oil Capitals are currently looking for a new GM and head coach after ending Troy Leslie’s seven-year tenure.
