Blue Bombers defensive back Deatrick Nichols may be new to the CFL, but you don’t need to tell him who Speedy B is.
Nichols, a new face in the Bombers secondary who will likely get the start on Thursday night, knows all about Hamilton Tiger-Cats star wideout Brandon Banks.
“That’s the guy. He’s the (reigning) Most Outstanding Player of the year and I wouldn’t want it any other way than this,” Nichols told the media on Monday.
“Being in my first game in the CFL, playing one of the top dogs, it makes you show up. I have no choice but to show up. It’s either I get embarrassed or I show up.”
Nichols and fellow CFL newcomer DeAundre Alford have been working alongside one another with the starters this week. It’s safe to assume Hamilton quarterback Jeremiah Masoli will test them early and often on Thursday. But Nichols, 27, might be the wrong guy to pick on as he was leading the XFL with three interceptions by the time the pandemic forced the league to pull the plug on its 2020 season.
“You gotta be up for the challenge, man. I feel like I’m a guy, too,” Nichols said.
“I know they’re pretty good as well over there. In watching them, they’re a high-paced team, look like a good-coached team, and I think we’re pretty good as well. It’s going to be a fight if I’m out there.”
NO TIME TO ADMIRE CHAMPIONSHIP BANNER
The Bombers will raise their 2019 Grey Cup championship banner on Thursday, but don’t expect head coach Mike O’Shea to get teary-eyed over it.
“I don’t know if we’re going to spend much time admiring that. I think everybody’s going to be pretty focused on what we have to do,” he said.
“It’s been a while since we’ve been on the field so I think guys are going to be pretty focused on making sure that they’re ready to play the game.”
Even after the final whistle, O’Shea’s stance on the championship banner will remain the same.
“I don’t know that I’ll ever take the time to sit back and enjoy anything like that,” said O’Shea.
“That’s a long time ago.”
