Calgary couple win Super Series mixed event, score $6K

THE inaugural Winnipeg Open — a Mixed Doubles Curling Super Series event — wrapped up Sunday afternoon at the Fort Rouge Curling Club with Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant finishing on top of the mountain.

The couple from Calgary took down Regina’s Chaelynn Kitz and Brayden Stewart 5-4 in eight ends in the final.

Peterman and Gallant finished the Winnipeg Open, which featured 25 teams, a perfect 7-0. They defeated Kerri and Kyle Einarson 11-7 in the quarterfinals before getting by Scotland’s Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat, the 2021 world mixed doubles champions, 6-5 in semifinal action.

Peterman and Gallant take home $6,000.

Kitz and Stewart beat Japan’s Chiaki Matsumura and Yasumasa Tanida 10-5 in the other semifinal.

The fifth and final Mixed Doubles Super Series event, the Super Series Championship, takes place Dec. 16-18 in Brantford, Ont.

DEKALB Superspiel

Over in Morris, the DEKALB Superseries had its quarterfinals on Sunday.

On the women’s side, Winnipeg’s Abby Ackland punched her ticket to Monday morning’s semifinal as she handed Casey Scheidegger a 7-0 defeat. Ackland will meet Vancouver’s Clancy Grandy with a spot in the championship game on the line.

The other women’s quarterfinal games did not finish before press deadline. Saskatoon’s Nancy Martin squared off against Edmonton’s Serena Gray-Withers and Minnesota’s Delaney Strouse played Jennifer Jones. The two winning teams will meet in this morning’s semifinal.

The men’s playoffs are loaded with Manitoba teams. Winnipeg’s Matt Dunstone beat Braden Calvert 6-2 in the quarters. Dunstone will meet another Winnipegger in the semis as Ryan Wiebe picked up a 7-4 victory over Edmonton’s Karsten Sturmay.

In the late draw, the two remaining quarterfinal games featured Minnesota’s John Shuster meeting Jordan Peters and Reid Carruthers taking on Corey Chambers.

The semis for both the men and women take place at 8 a.m. and the finals begin at 11 a.m.
