Neufeld downs Boehmer to clinch fifth Manitoba senior men’s curling crown

Randy Neufeld has done it again.

The skip from La Salle and teammates Dean Moxham, Peter Nicholls, and Dale Michie knocked off Petersfield’s Dave Boehmer 7-2 Monday afternoon at the Heather Curling Club to capture a record fifth Manitoba senior men’s championship.

The Neufeld foursome (2015, 2016, 2021, and 2022) previously shared the record with Boehmer — who won three straight between 2018-20 before winning again in 2023 — and Lloyd Gunnlaugson (1982-85).

Neufeld went 6-1 in round robin play before beating Boehmer the first time in the Page 1 vs. 1 Playoff game. In the final, the La Salle group took control early with singles in the first four ends. Boehmer responded with a deuce before Neufeld scored three in the sixth.

Neufeld won the Canadian title and world silver medal back in 2015. More recently, he claimed bronze at the 2023 Canadian masters. The Canadian national senior championship takes place in Moncton, N.B., in December.

Joining Neufeld and Co. in Moncton will be Hamiota’s Kathy Isaac who won the Manitoba women’s senior crown on Sunday with a 6-5 extra-end victory over Kim Link of East St. Paul.

It’s the first senior title for Isaac and a second for each of her Hamiota teammates: Lynn Sandercock, Sandra Cowling and Sheila Gregory.

Isaac had to beat Stonewall’s Laurie Deprez in Sunday morning’s semifinal after losing the Page 1 vs. 1 Playoff to Link on Saturday.
