Five Manitobans made the grade with Canada’s national women’s volleyball team as the four-day selection camp concluded on Thursday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
Team Canada’s new head coach Arnd Ludwig selected 30 players and released 15 of the 45 invited to camp. The players have been designated as Canada’s best prospects in its quest to qualify for the 2010 World Championship and the 2012 Olympic Games.
Outside hitters Tammy Mahon of Holland and Ashley Voth of Winnipeg were among the 10 players named to the senior A team. Holland is an eight-year Team Canada veteran who has been playing professionally in Romania while Voth, a University of Manitoba Bisons women’s team member, is in her third year on the squad.
"It was tough that (Ludwig) had to pare down without having the opportunity to observe these athletes in past competitions," said John Blacher, Team Canada director of operations. Ludwig became Canada’s head coach last January and this was his first selection camp.
"He has selected the top athletes that he felt performed at the camp and now he needs more time to be able to determine who can help the senior A team more as they attempt to qualify for the World Championship."
Blacher said a new FIVB (international volleyball federation) rule now allows national teams to carry two addition athletes for a maximum of 14 on the travelling roster.
With that rule in place, Ludwig can select up to four more players to the A team.
Those will come from a list of 10 players designated as A/B players at this time and be in place by mid-June. Samantha Loewen of East St. Paul, the Bisons setter, is the lone Manitoban on the A/B list.
The A team will represent Canada at the 2009 Pan American Cup tournament in Miami June 24-July 5 and the World Championship Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Rico July 8-10.
Middle Ashley Creighton of Brandon and outside hitter Sarah Morrissette of Winnipeg were named to the list of 10 players selected to the B team. Players named to the final B team roster will represent Canada at the 2009 Universiade (FISU Games) in Belgrade, Serbia July 1-12.
Local fans will get a chance to see Team Canada in action June 9-12 when the team hosts Peru for an exhibition series.
