Wrestler Aislynn Torfason of Winnipeg will represent Canada at the 2009 Junior Pan American Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Torfason, a student at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, will compete among 12 countries in the 59-kilogram class. She is the national junior silver medallist in that weight class.

 

Manitoba rugby players John Froggatt, Brady Ingenmey, Ryan Jones and Thomas Roche have been invited to attend the Rugby Canada national under-17 team selection camp Nov. 5-8 at Shawnigan Lake, B.C. Froggatt and Jones play for the Wasps while Ingenmey and Roche are Brandon Barbarians.

 

Pink will be prominent Saturday at the University of Manitoba Investors Group Athletic Centre for Pack the Place Pink Night as the Manitoba Bisons women’s basketball team wraps up their breast cancer awareness/prevention week.

The Bisons will wear pink uniforms while hosting the Winnipeg Wesmen in a non-conference game at 6 p.m., followed by the Saskatchewan Huskies-Toronto Varsity Blues game at 8 p.m.

Fans are invited to wear pink to show support. The games are part of the Bisons Invitational Tournament which begins tonight (www.gobisons.ca).

The pink uniforms will be auctioned off and fans can purchase special edition pink T-shirts with proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

"We are sending out a campus-wide challenge to wear the pink Bison T-shirts and come out to the tournament," said Bisons head coach Pam Danis.

 

Sisters Meagan and Carly Paracholski led Sisler to a first-place finish in the AAAA varsity girls division at the provincial high school cross-country championships Wednesday, ahead of Garden City and Miles Macdonell. The pair finished first and second, respectively, while Nikki Bell of Sanford Collegiate was third.

A first-place performance from Erin Teschuk enabled St. Mary’s Academy to finish third in the AAAA junior varsity girls behind Kelvin and Miles Macdonell. Julia Zrynyi of Vincent Massey (Winnipeg) was second and Catherine Cantin of St. John’s-Ravenscourt third.

Leading St. Paul’s to victory in the varsity boys AAAA event were Soren Fredrickson (first) and Riley MacCharles (third). Charles Brault was second, as was his school, College Louis Riel. Vincent Massey (Winnipeg) was third.

Levi Neufeld (second) and Mark Carlson (third) led Kelvin to the AAAA j.v. boys championship, ahead of Vincent Massey (Winnipeg) and River East. Third place went to Tyler Mislawchuk, who led Sanford Collegiate to the j.v. boys A-AAA division title ahead of Warren and St. Maurice. Sanford also won the j.v. and varsity girls A-AAA events, ahead of Warren and Glenboro in j.v. and Carman and Edward Schreyer in varsity.

The A-AAA varsity boys championship went to Steinbach Christian. Westgate was second and Warren third.
