LIMA, Peru — Brittany MacLean of Etobicoke, Ont., earned gold in the women’s 200-metre freestyle Sunday as Canada added another three medals to its total on the final day of the FINA world junior swimming championships.
Chantal Van Landeghem of Winnipeg and Mack Darragh of Oakville, Ont., also won a bronze each to give Canada 14 medals at the event — four gold, five silver and five bronze — six more than it earned at the 2008 competition.
In the women’s 200 freestyle, MacLean clocked a championship-record and personal-best time of one minute 58.93 seconds. Chelsea Chenault of the U.S. was second at 1:59.69 and Yuanhui Fu of China third at 1:59.70.
MacLean ended her week with two individual gold and two relay silvers and also placed fourth twice.
“The victory (Sunday) is a tribute to her character and desire to win,” said MacLean’s coach Kevin Thorburn. “She had a very consistent performance this week.”
In the women’s 50 freestyle, Bronte Campbell of Australia took the gold in 25.22 and Lia Neal of the U.S. the silver in 25.30. Van Landeghem followed in 25.35 to claim her fourth individual medal along with a relay silver.
In the men’s 200 butterfly, Darragh set a Canadian age group record and personal-best 1:59.31 in winning the bronze. Kenta Hirai of Japan won the gold in a championship-record 1:57.16 and Andreas Vazaios of Greece the silver in 1:59.27.
“The record is something I’ve really wanted for a long time,” said Darragh, who beat old personal mark by more than two seconds. “I’ve done a lot of hard work in training with my coach and it’s nice to see it pay off. It’s been great being part of this team.”
Kyle McIntee of Victoria was seventh.
In other finals Sunday: Victoria swimmers Alec Page and Will Brothers were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the men’s 1,500 freestyle; Luke Peddie of Edmonton was sixth in the men’s 100 freestyle; Jeffrey Swanston of Newmarket, Ont., finished sixth in the men’s 200 backstroke; and Noemie Thomas of Vancouver was eighth in the women’s 100 butterfly.
