St. Croix piles up points

MICHAEL St. Croix of Winnipeg, a forward with the Edmonton Oil Kings, has been named the WHL player of the week after scoring three goals and adding five assists in three Oil Kings wins. St. Croix, 18, is in his third full season with the Oil Kings. He is 11th overall in WHL scoring with 41 points (16 goals, 25 assists) in 29 games.

Wesmen volleyballers sweep awards

LAUREN Sears and Brendan Black, members of the University of Winnipeg Wesmen volleyball teams, have been named the Wesmen Pizza Hotline players of the week.

Sears, the Wesmen women’s team captain and fifth-year middle, helped lead the No.4-ranked Wesmen to a weekend sweep of the visiting Regina Cougars with 20 kills over the two matches and nine service aces.

Black, a second-year outside hitter, posted 23 kills in a weekend sweep of the Cougars including.

Kings’ player MJHL’s Peak Performer

MITCH Van Teeling of the Dauphin Kings has won the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Manitoba Pork Peak Performer of the Month award for November. The award recognizes excellence on the ice and in the community.

Van Teeling, third in team scoring with 10 goals and 30 points, serves as a volunteer companion and assistant for Kings trainer Jonathan Foster who is living with special needs. A native of Brandon, Van Teeling spends up to two days per week serving as a friend and assisting with cooking and other chores in Foster’s apartment.

Liew triple winner at badminton event

MELISSA Liew won a “triple crown” in badminton over the weekend at the 2011 Yonex-Herb Richard Manitoba Open tournament at the Winnipeg Winter Club.

Liew won titles in the A-division singles, women’s doubles with partner Serena Lam and mixed doubles with partner Kyle Grymonpre.

Brothers Andrew and David Harrison won the A-division men’s doubles title, defeating Justin Friesen and Ryan Giesbrecht. In the men’s singles A final, the brothers went head-to-head with Andrew defeating his older brother David 21-16, 14-21, 21-18.

Goalies grab top-player awards

GOALTENDERS Tiana Charban of the Fort Richmond Centurions and Michelle Kerdes of the Beliveau Barracudas have been named the Winnipeg Women’s High School Hockey League’s players of the week.

Charban was chosen in the CTV Division A after she stopped 38 of 41 shots to lead her team to a 4-3 win over the Vincent Massey Trojans last week. Kerdes, selected in the Winnipeg Free Press Division B, backstopped her team to a 1-1 tie against the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes.
