Dauphin to host 2014 Western Canada Cup

Dauphin has been selected as the host community for the 2014 Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup, the new junior A hockey regional championship tournament which will decide the Western regional representatives for the RBC Cup National Junior A Championship.

Dauphin will host the five-team tournament on April 26-May 4, 2014. The 13-game tournament will include a host team — the Dauphin Kings — and the champions from the four Western junior A leagues in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Both the champion and the runner-up in the Western Canada Cup will advance to the RBC Cup national championship. The Western Canada Cup will replace the former ANAVET Cup (Manitoba-Saskatchewan) and the Doyle Cup (B.C. Alberta) where the winners of those two tournaments had earned RBC Cup berths.

The new playoff format will begin in the 2012-2013 season with the inaugural Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup to be played April 27-May 5 at Nanaimo, B.C. The event will rotate after that to Manitoba (2014), Alberta (2015) and Saskatchewan (2016).

The last ANAVET Cup was won last April by the Humboldt Broncos who beat the 2011 ANAVET Cup champion Portage Terriers 4-3 in the best-of-seven series.

Ham, Bochinski lead the way

TYLER HAM of the Central Plains Capitals is the Chicken Chef West Division player of the week while Jordan Bochinski of the Winnipeg Wild is the DEKALB East Division player of the week in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League.

Ham, a 16-year-old native of MacGregor, recorded three goals and two assists to lift his team to a pair of wins in addition to a shootout loss last week. Bochinski, 16, scored two goals and two assists in a pair of wins against division rivals Interlake Lightning and Winnipeg Thrashers.

McNamee to represent Manitoba

BRANDON’S Terry McNamee and his team of third Kerri Einarson, second Kyle Einarson and lead Stacey Fordyce will represent Manitoba at the 2012 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship at the Mount Royal Curling Club in Quebec beginning Saturday. The 12-team event will conclude on Nov. 24 when the winning team will earn two berths (two two-person teams) into the inaugural Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials on March 14-17 in Leduc, Alberta.

Manitobans in Mitchell Bowl

MANITOBANS Tye Noble of Winnipeg and Quinn McCaughan of St. Francois Xavier, both members of the University of Calgary Dinos football team (9-1), will compete in the 2012 Mitchell Bowl on Saturday in Hamilton against the defending Vanier Cup champion McMaster Marauders (10-0). The game will be shown live on TSN at 3 p.m.

The Dinos won a fifth straight Canada West conference title on Nov. 10 beating the Regina Rams 38-14.

Koop, Duval shine for Bisons

BRITTANY KOOP of the women’s basketball team and Ian Duval of the men’s hockey team have been named the University of Manitoba Bisons Smitty’s athletes of the week.

Second-year forward Koop scored 30 points in a home sweep of the Brandon Bobcats last weekend. Duval, a fourth-year forward, had two multi-point games last weekend recording five points (two goals, three assists) while earning first star selection in both victories over the Lethbridge Pronghorns at home.
