Shae-Lynn Dodds has made history with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen women’s soccer program, being named a second-team all-Canada West all-star on Wednesday.
The second-year forward from Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, who scored seven goals this season, is the first Wesmen player to receive such an accoldade in the six-year history of the program.
“Shae-Lynn was an integral piece to our side this season and she has a bright future in the game,” Wesmen head coach Amy Anderson said in a statement released by the U of W. “I have a lot of belief that Shae-Lynn will become even better as she continues her growth as a player. Our program is in good hands with her going forward, and I’m exceptionally proud of her for this well-deserved honour.”
Two U of M Bisons players were also honoured: midfielder Amanda Wong joins Dodds as a second-team all-star and forward Nicole Davis was named to the All-rookie team.
Other local athletes receiving honors this week are:
— Bisons defensive tackle Kent Hicks was named Canada West and U SPORTS Defensive Player of the Week after registering six tackles, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble in last Saturday’s 38-34 overtime loss to UBC;
— Sadie McIntosh of the Yellowhead Chiefs was named October goalie of the month in the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League after winning four games, including three shutouts;
— OCN Blizzard goaltender Noah Giesbrecht was named MJHL Player of the Week after recording three consecutive wins and posting a 1.67 GAA and .959 save percentage;
— The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association players of the week are Ryan Ostermann of the Sturgeon Heights hockey team and Ethan Clark of the Carman Cougars cross-country team;
— And, Kevin Negus (volleyball) and Nicole Konieczny (basketball) are this week’s Bisons players of the week.
