Hey there, time traveller!

THE “fastest sport on two feet” takes centre stage at Canada Life Centre in August when the IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship comes to town.

It’s the second year in a row the tournament has been held in the city, but this time it will feature a full field of six teams and an opportunity to play in front of fans. The 2022 edition of the event will see teams from Australia, Canada, Haudenosaunee, Israel, Poland and the U.S. compete for a gold medal over thirteen games.

“It looks violent, but it’s not. So, that can kind of either attract some people or detract others, depending on their temperature for how crazy they like their sports,” said Canadian Lacrosse League president Chris Fox. “But Winnipeg hasn’t seen anything like this and I think they’re gonna be in for some exciting days.”

Last year’s event was a three-game, cumulative goal series between Canada East and Canada West. The 2021 event was drastically reduced owing to the pandemic, with many teams being unable to travel internationally.

However, a silver lining in the 2021 event was that Canadian players who missed out on a chance to compete in 2020 were able to dawn the red and white last summer.

“It’s going to be great having everybody back, it’s going to be great to showcase Winnipeg,” said Fox. “The ability to showcase the arena, showcase downtown, go to The Forks and even for our Canadian players, that’s going to be huge, because it’s not a city they would normally put on their radar.”

Fox expects Canada and Haudenosaunee to be on a collision course for gold. He added that the U.S. defeated Israel for bronze in 2019 and the field is wide open from there.

A team he spoke highly of was the Australians. Facilities are limited in the country, but they’ve started to turn tennis courts that are no longer in use into outdoor box lacrosse facilities.

“The rest of the games are going to be nail-biters,” said Fox. “It’s going to be crazy to see how much the Australians have been able to develop domestically, just within two years having some facilities now.”

The 2022 IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship will run from Aug. 8-14.

“We’re going to be watching some of the best lacrosse players in the world and their age group coming to compete,” said Fox.
