Goldeyes closing pitcher Victor Capellan pulled off yet another impressive save in a close 5-4 win over the Texas AirHogs at Shaw Park on Thursday night.
Fans were left holding in their breath in the top of the ninth, with AirHogs runners on first and second base for the tying and go-ahead runs.
After giving up the two singles, Capellan shut it down with back-to-back strikeouts to end the ball game, earning his 20th save of the year.
The win is Winnipeg’s fourth straight, tying a season-high winning streak.
The Fish opened scoring after James Harris ripped a fourth-inning fastball to left centre field to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Tied at two in the seventh, Kevin Garcia used some remarkable reflexes to tag out Air Hogs’ infielder Stewart Ijames, ending the inning and preventing the ‘Hogs from getting the go-ahead run.
Winnipeg moved into the lead for good after Dominic Ficociello ripped a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. The home run was Ficociello’s sixth of the year.
The Goldeyes are back in action tonight at Shaw Park, closing out their three-game series against the Air Hogs. First pitch is at 7:05p.m.
