Goldeyes trending up with 2nd straight ‘W’

CONSECUTIVE victories have been as rare as series wins for the Winnipeg Goldeyes in 2023.

Yet, the Fish managed to attain both in a 7-3 decision over the visiting Gary SouthShore RailCats at Shaw Park on Sunday.

The Goldeyes improved to 15-24 on the campaign but still sit in last place in the American Association. It’s the club’s first series victory since they bested the Chicago Dogs in a three-game series at the beginning of June.

Dayson Croes continued his outstanding rookie campaign, contributing a pair of hits and walks and a run batted in, while Najee Gaskins crossed home plate twice, adding a hit and two walks.

Joey Matulovich got the start and had a strong outing for the hosts, scattering four hits and a pair of walks while striking out six and conceding a lone run in six innings of work.

The Goldeyes hit the road for a 10-game trip, beginning in Lincoln against the Saltdogs today (7 p.m.).

Stamps receiver Henry out long term

CALGARY Stampeders wide receiver Malik Henry announced Sunday on Twitter that he ruptured his Achilles during Saturday’s loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The recovery time for a ruptured Achilles can take from four to six months, ruling him out for at least the rest of the regular season.

Henry had four catches for 92 yards on Saturday before he was carted off due to a non-contact injury in the fourth quarter.

The 26-year-old from Tifton, Ga., had 62 receptions for 1,023 yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games last season, earning West Division All-Star honours.

Calgary is 1-1 to start the season and has a bye in Week 4 before taking on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on July 7.

Teenaged Krueger wins first ATP title

GAIBA, Italy — American teenager Ashlyn Krueger won her first WTA title after rallying to beat top-seeded Tatjana Maria in the final of the Veneto Open on Sunday.

The 19-year-old Krueger prevailed 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 over the more experienced German.

The 35-year-old Maria was on the brink of victory when she moved into a 5-2 lead in the deciding set. With little to lose, Krueger started playing a more aggressive tennis and won five straight games, sealing the match with an ace.

Risk-taking Bublik upsets Rublev

HALLE, Germany — Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik upset Andrey Rublev 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the final of the Halle Open on Sunday ahead of Wimbledon.

Bublik, who had won eight of 27 matches all year before this week, played a risky style that paid off with 42 winners — third-seeded Rublev had 23 — along with 21 aces.

It’s the second title of Bublik’s career after he won in Montpellier last year with the player improving to a 2-6 record in tour-level finals, and his first win on grass after twice being runner-up in Newport. He rises to a career-high 26th in the rankings after starting the week 48th.

Coyotes pick up D-man Durzi

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Arizona Coyotes acquired defenceman Sean Durzi from the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday for a 2024 second-round draft.

The 24-year-old played 72 games with the Kings last season, tying the team lead among defensemen with nine goals and was second with 29 assists.

Durzi has 12 goals and 53 assists in 136 NHL games since making his debut in 2021-22.

The Mississauga, Ont., native was drafted in the second round in 2018 by the Toronto Maple Leafs and played parts of three seasons in the AHL after being traded to Los Angeles in 2019.

LONDON — Kalidou Koulibaly became the latest soccer star to head to Saudi Arabia on Sunday after joining Al-Hilal from Chelsea on a three-year contract.

The Senegal international has followed in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante by opting to play in the lucrative Saudi Pro League.

Al-Hilal, Saudi’s most successful team, this week also signed Portugal international Ruben Neves from Wolverhampton.

“From London Blues to Asia’s Leader,” Al-Hilal tweeted when announcing Koulibaly’s arrival.
