Some of Canada’s brightest basketball stars are coming to the city this summer.
The national men’s basketball team will be playing Nigeria in a warm-up game in Winnipeg ahead of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in China, Free Press sources confirmed Friday.
The game, scheduled for Aug. 9 at Bell MTS Place, is the second of two games scheduled between Canada and Nigeria, with the first being played in Hamilton. True North Sports and Entertainment issued a release Friday to media regarding a media conference on Monday “to announce a major international sporting event.”
With Canada expected to field its strongest team ever, the game has the potential to feature stars such as Andrew Wiggins, Jamal Murray, Kelly Olynyk and R.J. Barrett, among others. There could also be a hometown connection on the Nigerian team, with Winnipegger and former University of Manitoba Bison Keith Omoerah battling for a spot on the team. Omoerah was a member of Nigeria’s team during its qualifier games.
Sources say the Canadian team will train for a week in Toronto prior to the two games and will head straight to China after the match in Winnipeg.
