SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Russ Howard of New Brunswick and P.E.I.’s Mel Bernard remained unbeaten at the Canadian senior curling championships late Monday.
Howard leads the men’s field at 6-0, followed by Bernard at 5-0. Howard chalked up a 10-4 afternoon victory over Brad Whitehead of the Northwest Territories/Yukon. He also won 9-5 over Nova Scotia’s Bryan MacPherson (1-4) earlier Monday.
In women’s play, Nova Scotia’s Colleen Pinkney is the only unbeaten rink after B.C.’s Kathy Smiley stole a single in the 10th end to hand Manitoba’s Lois Fowler her first loss, a 4-3 decision. B.C. and Manitoba are tied for second at 5-1, and Pinkney is first at 5-0.
The winning rinks will represent Canada at the 2010 world senior championships, with the site and dates to be announced. Saskatchewan’s Eugene Hritzuk, along with Pat Sanders of B.C., will wear the Canadian colours at the 2009 world seniors in Dunedin, New Zealand, from April 24 to May 3.
Round-robin play continues at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club today.
