SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Lois Fowler’s hopes for a Canadian senior women’s curling championship came up a little short Friday night.
British Columbia’s Kathy Smiley scored a deuce in the eighth end to break a 4-4 tie and went on to beat Fowler’s Brandon Curling Club rink 6-5 in last night’s national semifinal.
Smiley’s team will now move on to the final to face Nova Scotia’s Colleen Pinkney today.
Fowler, whose Manitoba champions finished an impressive 9-2 in the round-robin, admitted the loss stung, but said her team will eventually take solace in a successful week overall.
“For sure we wanted to win it, but we have to look back and 9-2 is quite a feat right there,” Fowler said via telephone. “I think overall we’re happy with our game…
“If you had told us we were going to be in the semifinal before this, we would’ve been real happy with that. We have to look at what we did and we’re real happy with our week, that’s for sure.”
Fowler’s team of third Gwen Wooley, second Lori Manning and lead Lynn Sandercock went back and forth with Smiley through the first six ends.
After B.C. scored two in the first, Fowler responded with a deuce of her own in the second. Smiley scored singles in the third and fifth, Fowler singles in four and six.
Smiley blanked the seventh end and then turned the tide in the eighth when Wooley missed a takeout, which opened the door for Smiley. Still, Fowler believed there was an opening in the ninth end.
“I thought we were setting up beautiful for three, but we were a little deep,” Fowler said. “But they played well and overall I’m satisfied.”
Smiley’s rink of third Kerri Miller, second Rita Imai and lead Linda Brunn from the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster had defeated Fowler 4-3 earlier in the event. Fowler’s only other loss of the week came to Pinkney, a 7-3 setback.
Meanwhile, New Brunswick’s Russ Howard advanced to the men’s final.
Howard made a clutch shot on his final stone to count one and defeat P.E.I.’s Mel Bernard 7-5 in the men’s semifinal Friday night.
“We almost had ours in there welded so he couldn’t (get at it),” Bernard said. “It just takes an inch or two to make a difference.
“We were on the T-line on the side of the four-foot and he had to come in and hit it on the nose, because if he rolled off it a bit he was going out and we were going to get one. But he hit it perfect.”
Howard will face Ontario’s Bruce Delaney in the final.
