GLENN Howard and his curling rink from Coldwater, Ont., is heating up at the right time.
Howard guided his team to a second straight World Curling Tour victory Sunday when his team defeated the Edmonton rink skipped by Kevin Martin 5-3 in the final of the Cactus Pheasant Classic in Brooks, Alta.
Howard used last rock to score deuces in the second and fourth ends to build a 4-2 lead on Martin through four ends. Martin had the hammer to open the game, but was never able to score more than one with last rock. The teams blanked the fifth end and exchanged singles in the sixth and seventh.
Howard ran Martin out of rocks in the eighth.
Last week, Howard won the Grey Power World Cup, the first event on the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling Tour. His win this week should push him past Thomas Ulsrud for first in the World Curling Tour money list.
Martin, the winner of the spiel in 2007, reached the final after beating Winnipeg’s Jason Gunnlaugson 7-2 in the quarter-finals, then getting by Edmonton’s Randy Ferbey 7-4 in the semis. Howard beat Edmonton’s Ted Appelman 5-3 in the quarters and got by Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen 7-4 in the semis.
Howard, who also won the event last year, didn’t drop a game all weekend, posting a 6-0 record.
The hot streak comes just over a month before the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Olympic trials, set for Dec. 6-13 in Edmonton.
