Thieves steal berth, $2,000

David Bohn and his boys played like bandits Monday afternoon.

Aside from a two-ender on the first end, the Assiniboine Curling Club team stole all its points en route to a 7-1 victory over Bob Sigurdson’s Granite foursome to win the Safeway Championship Southern Berth Bonspiel at the East St. Paul Curling Club.

Along with the win, Bohn and his crew of third Dennis Bohn, second Kody Janzen and lead Larry Solomon, earned a berth into the Safeway Men’s Provincial Championships Feb. 10-14 in Steinbach and $2,000.

In the semifinals, Bohn defeated the Heather’s Wayne Ewasko 9-6 and Sigurdson, and his team of third Darren Oryniak, second Al Purdy and lead Chad Barkman won 7-4 over Mark Franklin of Fort Rouge.

Sigurdson blanked the second and third ends in an attempt to keep the hammer, only to have Bohn steal two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Sigurdson finally scored one in the seventh, and the teams shook hands.

"You know what, these playoffs really went good for us," David Bohn said following the game. "I’d have to say we were a little shaky in getting here. We had a few close games, but for some reason we lit it up in the playoffs."

Bohn says that winning a berth this early is a relief. "Its always nice to not have to play in the zones, but in a way it’s also nice to play zones because you kind of have to get fired up after Christmas. It’s a bit of a long break, but you know what, we’ll take it. It does take a lot of pressure off, and we can focus more on getting ready for the provincials."

Bohn and his twin brother Dennis have been curling together most of their lives. Moving up this year from the juniors is Janzen. "Kody is so impressive this year," said David Bohn. "He’s been shooting the lights out. He’s just an amazing shooter.

"Larry (Solomon), is also new this year, but we have curled a lot of years in the past and he has kind of gotten back into competitive curling. We all know each other really well, and things are going okay."
