WAYNE Ewasko of the Heather Curling Club earned one a berth in the Safeway Select provincial men’s curling championship Sunday.

Ewasko won the northern berth bonspiel in The Pas with a 9-5 victory over Kelly Robertson of Neepawa in the final.

In junior men’s playdowns, Riley Smith of the Pembina club and Alex Forrest of Deer Lodge qualified for next month’s provincials. Smith earned his way by defeating Andrew McMillan of Wildewood 8-5 and Forrest got his berth by beating Sam Good of Stonewall 8-5.

Pembina’s Breanne Meakin and Ste. Anne’s Alyssa Vandepoele qualified for the provincial junior women’s championship. Meakin beat Meghan Armit of Stonewall 7-6 for one berth while Vandepoele downed Pembina’s Shannon Birchard 10-9.

On the cashspiel circuit, Kevin Martin moved into first place on the World Curling Tour Monday list on Sunday after defeating B.C.’s Sean Geall 7-4 in the final of the Skookum WCT Cash Spiel in Whitehorse. The win was worth $15,000. Martin’s team has earned $64,250 on the year.

At the Sun Life Classic in Brantford, Ont., Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton and Toronto’s Wayne Middaugh cruised to undefeated A-side records. Stoughton and Middaugh are among the eight qualifiers who will play off for the $50,000 purse today.

In women’s action in Brantford, Calgary’s Shannon Kleibrink and American Debbie McCormick went undefeated through the A-side and will play in today’s playoffs. Top seed Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg was eliminated on the C-side, falling to Calgary’s Crystal Webster 6-5 on Sunday.

In Wainwright, Alta., Edmonton’s Randy Ferbey and Steve Mackey of Calgary both advanced to today’s playoffs through the A-side at the $40,000 Wainwright Roaming Buffalo Classic.

In Stonewall, Allan Lyburn of Brandon and Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers lead the pack heading into today’s playoffs. Both qualified through the A-side with perfect records at the $27,000 Interlake Pharmacy Classic.

Qualifying through the B and C events were Brendan Taylor, David Bohn, Dave Elias and Sean Grassie.

In women’s action, both Janet Harvey of Winnipeg and Holly Scott of Gilbert Plains, Man., went undefeated to advance to the playoffs. Four women’s teams will play for the $11,250 pot today.
