AFTER three quarter-final finishes and one semifinal appearance, Mike McEwen’s rink finally had a breakthrough on the World Curling Tour on Monday.
The foursome from Winnipeg won the Sun Life Classic in Brantford, Ont., using the hammer in the eighth end to score one in a 6-5 win over Martin Ferland’s foursome from Quebec City.
McEwen trailed 4-1 after three ends, but scored one in the fourth, stole another in the fifth and took the lead with a steal of two in the sixth.
His team got by Jean-Michel Ménard from Gatineau, Que., 5-3 in the semifinal final and beat Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton 7-3 in the quarters en route to the $11,000 pay day.
In women’s play, Jo-Ann Rizzo from Brantford used home club advantage to beat Calgary’s Shannon Kleibrink 7-5 in the final. Rizzo scored three with the hammer in the eighth to secure the win and the $11,000 cheque.
At the Interlake Pharmacy Classic in Stonewall, David Bohn needed an extra end to defeat Dave Elias 8-7 in an all-Winnipeg final Monday night. The win was worth $7,500 for Bohn’s Assiniboine Memorial crew.
He advanced to the final earlier Monday with a 6-2 win over Brendan Taylor while Elias advanced with a 5-3 victory over Sean Grassie.
Chelsea Carey of Morden was the winner in the women’s side of the bonspiel, defeating Janet Harvey 7-2 in the Monday’s final.
In Wainwright, Alta., Warren Hassall and his rink from Lloydminster, Sask., took home the $12,000 winners’ cheque at the Wainwright Roaming Buffalo Classic. Hassel scored one in the eighth with the hammer to beat Calgary’s Brent Bawel.
