Being the top seed can mean a target on your back but so far, the Kate Cameron team from the Victoria Curling Club is eluding any shots coming their way.

Cameron and her team of third Nicole Sigvaldason, second Sheyna Andries and lead Kelsey Hinds were undefeated after five games in the Junior Women’s Curling Championship at Charleswood Curling Club, heading into Sunday’s late draw. The Cameron foursome and three other teams held 5-0 marks including Meghan Armit of Stonewall, Breanne Meakin of St. Vital and Alyssa Vandepoele of Ste. Anne.

On the junior men’s side at Deer Lodge Curling Club, the undefeated teams included Jared Kolomaya from Stonewall at 6-0 while both Alex Forrest of Deer Lodge and Michael Johnson of Assiniboine Memorial took 5-0 records into the late draw.

"We’re having a lot of really good communication. There’s been some times where we’ve been struggling with our hits and we just keep being patient and it’s working out for us so far," said Hinds, 19, in her first year as lead with Cameron’s team.

Hinds said the team showed some grace under pressure in Sunday’s early afternoon draw in a 9-6 win over East St. Paul’s Erika Sigurdson.

"Most games we don’t tend to give up three’s but in this game, we got three, gave up three, got another three and in the sixth end we stole one and that was a huge turning point for us. It gave us a little boost and we pulled it together after that," Hinds said.

"Our main goal was to put pressure on the other team and make our shots and that’s what we did. That was a huge win because we figured that if we could at least go 5-0, even if we lost our last two games, we’d still have a really good chance (to make the playoff round)."

The 16 junior women’s teams at Charleswood and 16 junior men’s teams at Deer Lodge will complete play in their respective groups today with one game each in draws at 8:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

Winners from the two events will qualify for the national championships Jan. 16-24, 2010 in Quebec.
