Peters in senior playoffs with tiebreaker victory

BRANDON — Top-seeded Vic Peters of the Granite Curling Club needed a Sunday tiebreaker to secure his spot in the Strathcona Senior Men’s Curling Championship playoffs.

Peters defeated former Canadian senior champion Carl German 11-4 to secure second place in the Black Pool and a berth in the Page 2 playoff game Monday morning at the Brandon Curling Club

He will face Bob Sigurdson of the Fort Garry club, who beat defending provincial champion Brent Strachan of Hamiota 7-5 in another tiebreaker game.

Sigurdson executed an angle raise to steal one point in the ninth end.

“Brent had three locked behind guards and I made a 15-foot angle raise to put one on the button to steal one rather than give up three,” Sigurdson said. “That was the biggest shot of the game.”

Strachan had a chance to get out of trouble, but when his rock wrecked on a guard, he was left to take his chances in the 10th end and was run out of rocks.

“We just couldn’t put a whole game together in our last couple of games,” Strachan said.

Both were among a four-team block in the Red Pool to complete round-robin play with identical 4-3 records. Strachan defeated Rob McLean of Springfield 9-2 in one tiebreaker and Sigurdson scored an 8-3 victory over Clare DeBlonde of Fort Rouge in the other tiebreaker.

Rob Ramage of Baldur and Brandon’s Jim Renwick will meet in the Page 1 playoff game today at 9 a.m. Both won their pools with 5-2 records.

In senior women’s action, second-seeded Linda Van Daele defeated Brandon clubmate and defending champion Lois Fowler 7-5 in an extra end of the Page 1 playoff game to advance to the provincial championship match.

“It feels good to get to the final, but unfortunately we did this last year and (Fowler) came back to nipped us (in the final),” Van Daele, a veteran of seven senior women’s championship events and winner of two, said.

In the extra end, Fowler needed to execute a corner freeze of a Van Daele rock in the four-foot but her last rock failed to stop in time to count.

“We’ve just got to pick up our game a little bit,” Fowler said. “We had two picks in that extra end that cost us. We’ve just got to go out and curl.”

Fowler will have one more opportunity to reach the final when she faces third-seeded Joyce McDougall of Brandon, the 2007 senior women’s champion, in Monday’s semifinal at 9 a.m.

Fowler was a perfect 7-0 in the Black Pool, while Van Daele won the Red Pool with a 6-1 record.

McDougall advanced to the semifinal game with a 5-4 win over Sandra Cowling of Hamiota in the Page 2 game. Both McDougall and Cowling had 5-2 round-robin records.
