ELAINE Jones and Ruth Wiebe of the host St. Vital Curling Club took over the record books on Monday in the 2010 Manitoba Credit Unions Masters Women’s Curling Championships.

Jones, the team skip, and lead Wiebe each won their sixth provincial masters (60-plus) women’s title, the most all-time for an individual. The two were teammates on provincial champions in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2009. Jones and Wiebe have also won an unprecedented 71 games at the provincial masters women’s level.

Jones defeated the Karen Toderian team from Dauphin 5-3 in the championship final. Toderian’s team comprised third Darlene Squance, second Pearl Maksymetz, lead Verna Miller and fifth Vicki Todoruk. The Jones team will head to the 2010 Canadian Open Masters Championship in Saint John, N.B., March 28-April 2.

"They (six wins) are all special. It is special in that I have two players with me that I haven’t had before in masters. Anne Wright did play with me in seniors when we won Manitoba but Pat Malanchuk, this is her first buffalo (provincial title)," said Jones, who has curled with Wiebe for 12 years. The two have been part of teams which have competed in three national finals but have yet to win one. "I’m still trying to get that last one, it would be nice to have a Canadian (title)."

The Jones team, which had beaten Toderian 5-4 in the 1 vs. 1 Page playoff on Sunday to get to the final, had a perfect 9-0 record in the provincials.

"We just have to play the way we’re capable of. I think we’re capable of winning," she said.

Jones switched to using a throwing stick last year as back trouble no longer allows her to slide out of the hack.

"Sometimes, I think, when you get to this level, your game goes astray on occasion but I think we have as good a chance as anybody does and as long as we play within ourselves, we’ll be fine."

Wiebe said she was thrilled for her team and to have a chance to go to nationals for a sixth time.

"It’s just great, I didn’t think it would happen again because we’re all getting a little older and it’s a little tougher," Wiebe said. "It’s really special because winning never gets old, you get to represent our province, see different parts of the country and meet so many nice people. It’s just a great feeling."
