DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — Defending champion Jennifer Jones kicked off her bid for a fourth Grey Power Players’ Championship title in five years on Tuesday with a 7-3 victory over Chelsea Carey.
Jones played a strong defensive game in the battle between Winnipeg skips, forcing Carey to give up a steal of one point in the third end and a steal of two in the fourth en route to an early 4-1 advantage.
Leading 4-2 after five ends, Jones put the game away in the sixth after executing an open hit to score three.
"We didn’t start off very well but when they had hammer I thought we played pretty well," said Jones. "We struggled with draw weight early and caught on near the end. Hopefully, we’ll carry that on to (Wednesday)."
This is the season’s final Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event, and Jones is aiming to win her second consecutive title.
In other Draw 1 action, Kelly Scott of Kelowna, B.C., picked up her first victory of the tournament after defeating Kerri Flett of Winnipeg, 6-4, while Eve Belisle of Montreal upset Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton, 6-2.
