DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — Cheryl Bernard capped her most successful season by cashing a big cheque Saturday.
The Calgary skip won the Grey Power Players’ Championship with a 6-4 win over crosstown rival Crystal Webster, clinching the Capital One Cup points race in the process.
“This season has been about our team and our teamwork and our coach,” Bernard said on CBC. “That’s been the most amazing thing to be involved with these girls and have such a great year.”
The win was worth $75,000 — the team earned $25,000 for winning the bonspiel and $50,000 for winning the Cup. Add that to the silver medal the team won at the Vancouver Olympics — worth $15,000 — and the Bernard rink will have some extra spending money.
“Today just puts a nice cap on (the season),” lead Cori Bartel told CBC. “I think it just finishes everything on such a positive note. We’ve proven again that we’re a great team. It’s been a great year and our timing couldn’t have been better.”
Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones, who lost to Bernard in the quarter-finals Friday, placed second in the Capital One Cup standings and won $25,000. Kelly Scott of Kelowna, B.C., who failed to qualify for the final this weekend, was third and won $10,000.
In the men’ semifinals, Olympic gold medallist Kevin Martin will put his undefeated record on the line against Jeff Stoughton, while Brad Gushue meets world champ Kevin Koe. Winnipeg’s Stoughton advanced by scoring five in the fifth, which brought about handshakes in his 7-1 win over Pat Simmons.
Edmonton’s Koe advanced by beating Glenn Howard 5-3 in a repeat of the Brier final.
