MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Jennifer Jones, Stefanie Lawton and Shannon Kleibrink all posted big wins Wednesday evening to move to 2-0 at the Canada Cup of Curling.
The trio are tied atop Section A in the women’s draw after one day of competition at The Arena.
Jones, the former world champion from Winnipeg, had three-spots in the first and fifth ends to build a 6-1 lead against Shelley Nichols of St. John’s and went on to win 10-3. Lawton, from Saskatoon, had steals of four, two and two in consecutive ends in a 13-3 win over Kelly Scott of Kelowna, B.C., in a crossover game with Section A. Kleibrink doubled up Chelsea Carey of Morden, Man., 8-4.
Earlier Wednesday, Jones beat Carey 8-6, Lawton defeated Nichols 9-6 and Kleibrink scored another 8-4 win, this time over Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin in a crossover game.
In Section A, Krista McCarville of Thunder Bay, Ont., is alone in first place after an 8-7 win over Olympic silver medallist Cheryl Bernard of Calgary in the evening draw. McCarville scored three with the hammer in the 10th to move to 2-0.
Earlier, McCarville needed an extra end to beat Amber Holland of Kronau, Sask., 7-6 and Bernard dumped Scott 6-3.
In the evening draw, Holland rallied from a 6-3 deficit after seven ends to beat Nedohin 7-6.
In the first men’s draw, Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., scored three in the fifth in an 8-5 win over Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton. The other four games went according to form with Randy Ferbey’s team from St. John’s defeating Rob Fowler of Brandon, Man., 7-5; Olympic champion Kevin Martin beating up on Serge Reid of Saguenay, Que., 8-2 in only six ends; red-hot Mike McEwen from Winnipeg doubling up Mat Camm of Ottawa 6-3 and Edmonton’s Kevin Koe beating Brent Bawl of Calgary 8-6.
The second men’s draw was late Wednesday night.
