GIMLI’S Patti Wuthrich got her first international win yesterday as the high-performance director for the Russian men’s curling program.
Wuthrich is helping coach the Russian men this week at the European Curling Championship in Champery, Switzerland. The Russians beat the Netherlands 7-5 Monday to improve to 1-4.
A new Russian men’s team had to be cobbled together in just a couple weeks after curling officials in that country last month summarily dismissed Manitobans Jason Gunnlaugson, Justin Richter and Tyler Forrest, who the Russians had hired last spring to curl as the country’s national men’s team.
Wuthrich retained her position in the purge.

Dauphin’s Rae Kujanpaa won a wild one on home ice Monday afternoon, outlasting Brent Gedak of Estevan, Sask., to capture the final of the $30,000 Dauphin Clinic Pharmacy Classic.
Kujanpaa scored threes in the second, fourth and sixth ends but still needed a single with the hammer coming home to squeak out a 10-9 victory.
Kujanpaa was supported by Ray Baker at third, Bob Alm at second and lead Bob Scales.

Provincials berths are up for grabs in women’s, junior women’s, junior men’s and men’s curling this week.
The Scotties city and rural zones begin Thursday and wrap up Sunday as 14 of the 16 berths into the Manitoba women’s curling championship next month in Altona go on the block. The winner in Altona becomes Team Manitoba and will join Team Canada’s Jennifer Jones at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Charlottetown in February.
Regional junior playdowns will also run Thursday to Sunday, with the berth winners advancing to next month’s Manitoba Juniors at the Victoria Curling Club (junior women) and Gimli (junior men).
A single berth into the Manitoba men’s curling championship in Beausejour in February will also be up for grabs Thursday to Sunday at the Brandon Men’s Bonspiel.
