MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Mike McEwen won twice Friday to clinch at least a tiebreaker at the Canada Cup of Curling.
The Winnipeg skip finished the round robin at 4-1 after wins over Randy Ferbey and Serge Reid at The Arena and sits second in Section A at the Canadian Curling Association event. McEwen, who has won three straight Asham World Curling Tour events, had to wait for the result of Friday night’s match between Ferbey and Glenn Howard to find out if he gets straight into the playoffs or needs to play a tie breaker.
McEwen took advantage of a couple of misses by Ferbey’s team in the sixth end to steal four in the morning draw and went on to win 8-4.
“We were lying two, we missed two guards,” Ferbey’s fourth shooter, Brad Gushue, told reporters describing what happened in the sixth. “Mike made a couple of good shots. Then I missed my last one. I was hitting against two and if I get through the hole I probably cut them down to one, or get one ourselves.”
McEwen also beat Reid of Saguenay, Que., 7-3.
Ferbey, at 3-1, needs to beat Martin, 4-0, to force a three-way tie for first. Martin won his first game Friday in six ends — a 8-2 demolition of Calgary’s Brent Bawl.
In Section B, Glenn Howard of Ontario clinched a playoff berth with his fourth straight win. Howard beat Ottawa’s Mat Camm 6-4 to go to 4-0 heading into his round-robin finale Friday night against Edmonton’s Kevin Koe.
The game was a must-win for Koe, 3-1, after Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton won his third straight to finish the round-robin 3-2. Stoughton beat Rob Fowler of Brandon, Man., 9-5 and beat Koe earlier in the week.
On the women’s side, Calgary’s Shannon Kleibrink is the only unbeaten team at 4-0 following a 10-6 win over Shelley Nichols of St. John’s in the morning. The 2006 Olympic bronze medallist is assured of at least a tiebreaker, however she had to play Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg, 3-1, in the night draw.
Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton is also in the mix in Section A after finishing the round robin at 4-1. Lawton needed an extra end to beat Chelsea Carey of Morden, Man., 8-5 in the afternoon draw.
