A defending Canadian champion third, the defending Manitoba champion skip and the top challenger were among the teams booking their tickets on Sunday to next month’s Manitoba women’s curling championship.
Cathy Overton-Clapham, third for Jennifer Jones on the last three Canadian women’s champions, won two straight over Fort Rouge’s Sherry Just — the only other team in Overton-Clapham’s zone — to capture her playdown with her new team and secure one of 16 berths in the provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Altona.
Overton-Clapham’s victory came as 14 women’s berths were decided in zone playdowns across Manitoba Sunday.
Also earning a berth to Altona was Jill Thurston, the defending Manitoba women’s champion skip, who had to rebuild her team in the off-season after the front-end of Raunora Westcott and Leslie Wilson defected last spring and ultimately landed with Overton-Clapham. Thurston defeated Fort Garry’s Tracy Igonia in two straight games in another two-team zone playdown.
Meanwhile, Chelsea Carey — the hottest Manitoba women’s team on the cashspiel circuit this winter — earned her provincials berth in a zone playdown in Starbuck, dropping former Manitoba junior champion Sabrina Neufeld 7-1 in a berth final.
Neufeld then went on to lose again in a second berth final in the combined zone to La Salle’s Deb McCreanor.
The minor upset of the day took place in Zone 12, where former Manitoba champion Barb Spencer was dumped 7-2 by her former second, Brette Richards.
Other women’s zone winners were Snow Lake’s Kelly Wiwcharuk; Swan River’s Bev Lumax; Brandon’s Lisa Blixhavn; Brookdale’s Tina Kozak; Springfield’s Karen Rosser; East St. Paul’s Kim Link; Carberry’s Betty Buurma; and Fort Rouge’s Joelle Brown and Michelle Montford.
The Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts is scheduled for Jan. 26-30.
Meanwhile, at the Brandon Men’s Bonspiel, William Lyburn of Deer Lodge downed Brandon’s Terry McNamee 6-1 to advance to the Manitoba men’s curling championship in Beausejour, Feb. 9-13.
