CALGARY– Last season Braeden Moskowy’s quest for a national junior curling championship ended in the semifinals, this year the Saskatchewan skip seems poised to skip that step altogether.
Moskowy earned his eighth straight win Tuesday night to cement his spot in first place at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian junior men’s curling championship.
Ontario’s Mat Camm is the only one in striking distance of Moskowy in the battle for first place and bye to the final. Camm won twice Tuesday against teams in the playoff hunt, dropping a three-spot in the sixth in a 9-3 win over Colin Thomas of Newfoundland and Labrador. He followed that with a 5-3 triumph over Kendal Thompson of Nova Scotia.
The wins boosted Camm’s record to 6-2. He’s followed by Thomas at 6-3 and Thompson at 5-3. Manitoba’s Sam Good is 3-5.
On the women’s side Alberta’s Nadine Chyz won her lone game Tuesday to move to 8-0. The hometown favourite scored the lone deuce of the game in the fourth end in a 6-4 win over Taryn Williams of the Northwest Territories.
Saskatchewan’s Trish Paulson stopped a two-game slide Tuesday night with a 9-3 win over New Brunswick’s Jennifer Armstrong to grab sole possession of second place at 6-2.
B.C.’s Dailene Sivertson, who stole the winning point in a 4-3 victory over Paulson earlier Tuesday, fell into a three-way tie for third after dropping an 8-7 decision to Newfoundland and Labrador’s Erin Porter in the night draw.
Sivertson is tied with Manitoba’s Breanne Meakin and Ontario’s Clancy Grandy at 5-3.
The round robin concludes Thursday, with any tiebreakers set for Friday.
