CALGARY — Saskatchewan’s Braeden Moskowy and Alberta’s Nadine Chyz both pushed their winning streaks to 10 games Wednesday and clinched playoff berths at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships.
Moskowy improved to 10-0 in junior men’s competition Wednesday night with an 11-5 drubbing of Nova Scotia’s Kendal Thompson. The Saskatchewan rink scored five in the first end to take an early lead and put the hammer down in the sixth with four more points. The loss dropped Thompson to 6-4 and into a four-way tie for the third and final playoff spot.
Earlier, Moskowy beat Colin Thomas of Newfoundland and Labrador 5-2, pushing Thomas into the four-loss group. Ontario’s Mat Camm has earned at least a tiebreaker after beating Jonathan Gardner of British Columbia 10-3 — a score of four in the eighth sealed the convincing win. He opened the day by rallying from a 5-3 deficit at the fifth-end break to win 10-7 against Northern Ontario’s Cody Johnston.
Camm boasts an 8-2 record heading into the final day of round-robin play, but still has a date with Moskowy on his schedule.
Thomas, Thompson, Alberta’s Colin Hodgson and New Brunswick’s Jon Rennie are all tied for third at 6-4.
Manitoba’s Sam Good lost 8-5 to P.E.I. in the late draw and fell to 4-6 overall and a tie for eighth spot.
Chyz leads the way in the women’s competition, but had to work for it. She used last rock in the 10th, to squeak by Prince Edward Island’s Sarah Fullerton 5-4 in the afternoon and then used hammer in the last end to score the winning point in a 7-6 win over Quebec’s Alanna Routledge in the evening.
Saskatchewan’s Trish Paulson took care of business Wednesday to maintain her grip on second place. She beat Erin Porter from Newfoundland and Labrador 9-2 and then did one better, scoring a 10-2 win over Nova Scotia’s Sara Doucet. The two wins give Paulson at least a tiebreaker spot.
Fullerton got her chance to play spoiler later Wednesday when she stole one in an extra end to beat Manitoba’s Breanne Meakin 8-7. The loss dropped Meakin to 6-4 and into a tie with Jennifer Armstrong of New Brunswick and Dailene Sivertson of British Columbia for the final playoff spot.
Meakin and Sivertson will play Thursday night in the final round-robin draw. The round robin concludes today, with any tiebreakers set for Friday. The women’s playoffs are Saturday and the men’s playoffs go Sunday.
