ALBERTA booked its spot in the final of the 2012 Canadian mixed curling championship after wrapping up first place in the round robin with a pair of wins Wednesday in Sudbury, Ont.
Skip Kurt Balderston from Grande Prairie pushed his record to 10-1, two games better than second-place Sylvie Robichaud of New Brunswick with each team having two games left to play. Balderston beat Robichaud in their head-to-head game on Tuesday, giving him the tiebreaker, if necessary, and a direct berth into the championship game.
Balderston handed Doug Marshall from British Columbia a potentially devastating fifth loss in the afternoon draw. Steals of two in the fifth and three in the sixth paced the Albertans to an 8-3 win. He followed that up with an 8-5 win over Ontario’s Mark Homan.
Robichaud split her two games Wednesday to move to 8-3 and controls her own destiny for one of the final two playoff spots. Five teams are tied at 7-4, setting up some key matches in the final four round-robin draws.
Assad, who beat Manitoba’s Sean Grassie 9-6, is one of five teams at 7-4, along with Grassie, Homan, Quebec’s Martin Ferland and Saskatchewan’s Jason Ackerman.
