SUDBURY, Ont. — Jason Ackerman’s Saskatchewan rink advanced to the final of the Canadian mixed curling championship with an 8-3 win over New Brunswick’s Sylvie Robichaud in a tiebreaker on Friday.
Ackerman blew the match open by scoring two in the sixth end and following with four in the seventh to take an 8-2 lead.
Robichaud got one back in the eighth end, but it wasn’t nearly enough to close the gap, and with the hammer reverting to Ackerman the teams shook hands.
Ackerman will face Kurt Balderston’s Alberta rink in the tournament’s final on Saturday.
Balderston led the round-robin with an 11-2 record, while Ackerman and Robichaud were tied at 9-4, necessitating the tiebreaker.
Earlier, Brett Gallant’s Prince Edward Island rink needed just seven ends to rout Scott Hamilton’s Yukon rink 10-2.
The win gave P.E.I. an 8-5 record to finish the tournament in a five-way tie for third, while Yukon lost all 13 of its matches.
Also, Sean Grassie’s Manitoba (8-5) club finished Ed Sattelberger’s Nunavut (1-12) team 10-5 in nine ends. Skip Gary Alcock of Newfoundland and Labrador (4-9) led his team to an 8-6 victory over Chris Sutherland’s Nova Scotia (4-9) team.
