WINNIPEG’S Randy Dutiaume, the 2005 Manitoba men’s champion, suffered his first loss of the MCA Bonspiel Saturday afternoon, falling 8-7 to East St. Paul’s Carl German, a former Manitoba senior men’s champion.

Dutiaume is the most notable name among the curlers still seeking one of the final five berths up for grabs this weekend into the Safeway Championship, Feb. 8-12 in Dauphin.

The 124th MCA Bonspiel continues through today and wraps up Monday.

Other teams sustaining their first loss on Saturday included Fort Rouge’s Gregg Melnyk, Pembina’s Dean Dunstone and Scott Madams and Fort Garry’s Robert Baldwinson, who was beaten 10-0 by former Canadian Mixed champion Sean Grassie.

Among the notables still undefeated heading into Saturday night were Fort Rouge’s Steen Sigurdson, who handed former Manitoba men’s champion Mark Lukowich his first loss of the weekend by a score of 7-4 earlier in the day.

The more curious results on Saturday included a 14-13 slugfest that saw 2010 Manitoba masters champion Ron Westcott hang on for the win over Deer Lodge’s Cliff Murphy.
