PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE — Janet Harvey has won three Manitoba women’s curling championships over the years — and she very quickly on Friday clawed her way back into contention to win a fourth title at the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

First, Harvey dropped Chelsea Carey 6-5 in an extra end on the morning draw — the only loss Carey has suffered.

Later in the day, Harvey made short work of seventh seed Michelle Montford with a 7-1 thrashing to improve to her team’s round-robin record to 4-2.

Put it together and Harvey has positioned herself to earn at least a playoff tiebreaker game with a victory in her final round-robin game this morning.

The catch? Harvey will have to beat second seed Cathy Overton-Clapham, who is also 4-2. And the stakes are the same for both — win and you’re in, lose and you’re out.

“We finally put a few games together in a row and I’m starting to play a little better than I had been earlier in the week,” Harvey said Friday. “You can’t have a skip missing a bunch of shots and expect to win.”

The good news for Harvey heading into her showdown with Overton-Clapham is that she beat the latter both times the two faced each other in bonspiels this season.

But that is the operative word, says Overton-Clapham — bonspiels.

“Those are bonspiel games,” Overton-Clapham said, “and this is what we play for all year.”

Lori Forbes of The Pas quintupled her team’s offensive output in just one game Friday.

But the result was the same as Forbes lost her fifth game in a row, 9-4 to Terry Ursel of Plumas.

Forbes had been outscored 43-1 coming into her game with Ursel and she fell behind 4-0 after just three ends.

But a single in the fourth end got her on the board for the first time in three games and was followed just two ends later by her first deuce of the event.

“It was exciting,” said Forbes. “I need to improve more, clearly. And I plan on that. But we knew our games would get better as things went on. We still have two games left and hopefully we can keep it going.”

Miami’s Lisa DeRiviere continued to defy the odds — and her 14th seeding — on Friday.

DeRiviere beat both Kim Link of East St. Paul and Liza Park of Brandon to improve to 4-2 and guarantee her team at least a playoff tiebreaker game with a win in her final round-robin game this morning against Dauphin’s Lisa Menard (1-5).

Curlers in Winnipeg who have lobbied for the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts to return to Winnipeg are going to get something very close to that in 2013 when the event is held in Stonewall.

Curl Manitoba officials announced Friday that the 2013 Scotties will be held at Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex, Jan. 23-27.
