STEFANIE LAWTON got off to a blazing start at the final Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event of the season, beating defending champion Jennifer Jones 7-2 in just six ends on Tuesday.
Lawton and her rink from Saskatoon scored a pair in the second and three in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead into the break in the first draw at the Sun Life Financial Players’ Championship in Summerside, P.E.I.
The Lawton rink outcurled their counterparts from Winnipeg at every position and had a 93 per cent to 76 per cent lead overall. Jones has won four of the past six Players’ Championships.
Winnipeg’s Cathy Overton-Clapham was part of three of those championships with the Jones team, but is now skipping her own rink. She got off to a great start through four ends Tuesday, building a 6-1 lead against Eve Muirhead. The Scottish skip battled back to force an extra end, but after giving up three straight stolen single points, Overton-Clapham was able to score the winning point with the hammer to pull out a 7-6 victory.
In other opening draw action, Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni upset 2012 Canadian champion Heather Nedohin of Edmonton 3-2 and Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont., doubled up Chelsea Carey of Morden, Man., 6-3.
The Players’ Championship features eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams in separate events. The top four teams after the round robin in each competition qualify for the playoffs.
Men’s action gets underway today.
